In 2020, the Detroit Housing Network (DHN) was created to simplify the way Detroiters access housing services, and our six Network Members were the backbone of our work. Once new clients completed our online, over-the-phone or in-person intake experience, our Members would work with them to help them find, understand and apply for the housing services that would help them reach their goals. However, our Network Members had been using lower-tech systems to do similar, smaller-scale work for years before DHN.

When DHN launched, we recognized the importance of building trust with both our Network Members and the communities we serve. We saw an opportunity to do this by highlighting the decades of experience our Members brought to housing work through a video profile series that told the story of who our Members are and why they do the work that they do.

This is probably the best portrayal of a partnership in a video I have ever seen.
— Patrick Berger, Marketing Manager at Matrix Human Services

Our goal was to establish ourselves and show that the Detroit Housing Network was not new to helping Detroiters reach their housing goals. We chose to do this by hiring a small but capable crew to interview someone in a leadership role and someone in a housing counseling role for each of our Network Members. We also interviewed one of their clients - juxtaposing the vision and mission of the Member’s work with the impact and relief that the client felt once receiving housing support.

We also saw this shoot as an opportunity to begin building our library of content for future marketing. Our shot list included aerials of each Member location and the surrounding neighborhood, Broll of the client and housing counselor working together, and heartwarming shots of the client caring for their home.

The shoot was a massive logistical undertaking that set the standard for how DHN would work with our Network Members to tell their stories. We paid all clients for their time and prioritized their needs above all else. We also shared all Broll, interview footage and aerial shots with our Network Members for their own marketing.

Not only did these six videos provide a strong foundation for DHN to tell our unified story, but they helped us build trust with our Network Members by setting the bar high for quality and execution.

The Small Business Murals Project (SBMP) has been transforming Detroit’s neighborhoods since 2017 by pairing local artists with small business owners to create large-scale murals. By 2021, the program had produced 26 murals across the city, strengthening connections between artists, entrepreneurs and residents.

The inherent visual nature of this project presented us with an opportunity to produce a recap video that captured the impact of the 2021 murals. By visiting each of the seven mural sites, we would highlight the creative process, the stories behind the art and the ways these murals support both small businesses and the city’s entrepreneurial spirit.

This project contributes to the creative economy growth in Detroit, while supporting small businesses and neighborhoods.  Our hope is that the murals will drive traffic to the businesses while amplifying the vibrancy of Detroit neighborhoods.
— Jasmin DeForrest, Director of Community Sponsorships at the Rocket Community Fund

Our goal was to create a short, compelling video that documented the 2021 murals while also serving as a brand marketing asset for the program. We managed production with a small run-and-gun crew, which allowed us to move quickly between mural sites, capture artists at work in real time and gather interviews on location without disrupting business operations.

The video blended on-site footage of the artist at work, conversations with business owners and sweeping visuals of the finished murals. To provide broader context we also included our Director of Community Sponsorships who spoke to the program’s long-term goals, and a spokesperson from the organization that helped us launch the murals’ first ever augmented reality feature. By weaving together these perspectives the video illustrated how art not only beautifies public spaces but also drives foot traffic, preserves history and builds lasting connections in Detroit’s neighborhoods.

The final recap video was distributed across digital channels and became a core storytelling piece for the Rocket Community Fund’s community sponsorships work. It elevated the visibility of the Small Business Murals Project while also celebrating the collaboration between the artists and entrepreneurs.
